Page Speed to be an Official Mobile Ranking Factor. Is Your Site Ready?
How long does it take for your website to load on mobile? The longer people are waiting, the more likely you are to lose those precious leads to your competitor with a better performing site. 53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than three seconds to load. And now… Google may punish you even more for your slow site.
Coming in July of 2018, Google will be releasing what they call their “Speed Update”. This algorithm change will officially make page speed a ranking factor for mobile searches. With over 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide, Google has been able to dominate the competition with their incredible attention to the wants and preferences of their users. As our attention spans deteriorate and our need for now continues to grow, page speed will certainly continue to be a major concern to Google.
You get the point, your website needs to be faster…. But what can you do about it?
1. Test your Site
Use Google’s handy PageSpeed Insights tool to see how your website holds up. It will give you an optimization ranking number as well as some recommendations on where you can improve.
2. Optimize Images
If you can physically see your big, beautiful homepage banner load bit by bit, this one’s for you! And there’s good news- you don’t need to compromise the design of your website to increase your site speed. At the bottom of your page speed test, there is an option for you to download your website’s optimized images. You can then replace the images on your site with the compressed and optimally formatted images. Thanks, Google!
