3 Steps to Getting Started in SEO
Many people understand the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but aren’t sure how to get started. While SEO can be complex and requires commitment, there are several easy steps you can take today to get headed in the right direction!
1. Complete and Optimize your Meta Tags
This is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your website’s SEO- and it’s free! Meta tags are snippets of text that describe a webpage’s content. They are not visible to website visitors, but appear in each webpage’s code. Within your website’s CMS, make sure each of the following meta tags are completed and optimized using these recommended guidelines:
Title tag: A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a webpage. Title tags are displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs) as the clickable headline for a search result.
Optimal format- “Primary Keyword – Secondary Keyword | Brand Name”
Optimal length- 50-60 characters
Meta description: Meta descriptions are HTML attributes that provide a summary of a webpage’s content. They commonly appear underneath the blue clickable links in SERPs.
Optimal format- This short page description is your opportunity to “advertise” content to searchers, and searchers’ chance to decide whether the content is relevant to their search. Use keywords, but also create a persuasive description that makes a searcher want to click through to your website.
Optimal length- 160 characters
2. Keep your Website Updated with Fresh Content
Updating your website shows search engines like Google that you care about your visitor’s user experience- and that’s what they are there for! They want to provide their users with a good experience, so they will notice and reward you for updated content. Plus, it’s an easy way for you to incorporate your keywords in a natural way. Here are some easy ways to keep your website ‘fresh’:
New images and videos
